RISING SEA LEVELS ARE A SERIOUS CONSEQUENCE OF HUMAN-INDUCED CLIMATE CHANGE. IF GREENHOUSE GASES CONTINUE TO BE EMITTED AS THEY ARE RIGHT NOW, SCIENTISTS EXPECT GLOBAL SEA LEVES TO RISE BY AROUND 60 TO 100 CENTIMETERS BY THE END OF THE CENTURY.
AS A RESULT, COASTAL REGIONS WILL FACE SERIOUS CHALLENGES IN THE COMING DECADES: STORM SURGES WILL BECOME STRONGER, SALT WATER MIXES WITH GROUNDWATER. THIS MAKES DRINKING WATER UNDRINKABLE, AND AGRICULTURAL USE MAY BECOME IMPOSSIBLE.
IN THIS GROUP WORK, WE SHED A LIGHT ON CHALLENGES AND CONSEQUENCES THAT COME WITH RISING SEA LEVELS.
CHAPTER ONE WAS SHOT IN COLLABORATION WITH HANNAH ADERS AND FOCUSES ON NATURAL COASTAL PROTECTION.
COASTAL LANDSCAPES SUCH AS DUNES OR SALT MARSHES CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO COASTAL PROTECTION. MOREOVER, AS NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS, THEY PROVIDE HABITATS FOR MANY ANIMAL AND PLANT SPECIES.
